Roxanne, Antoine, and all,
Thanks Antoine for mentioning the DCMI/NKOS Task Group's wiki. I am trying
to answer on behalf of our Task group. Corrections and other comments are
welcome.
1. For this particular 'version' question we can share a related attempt
of modeling the entities and relationships based on FRBR model, using
ASIS&T Thesaurus of Information Science, Technology, and Librarianship[1]
as an example.
We did NOT address the question of whether a new version is a new
"work" when there are significant changes of title, content, and
authorship occur. Hence:
€ The ASIST thesaurus as a whole is a "work".
€ Different versions (such as Version 1994 in English, Version 2005 in
English, Version 2012 in French) are different "expressions" of this work.
€ The printed edition of the 2010 English version and the SKOS Linked data
representation of the same version are examples of "manifestations".
A subset of expressions and manifestations of this work is illustrated and
can be found in the wiki page at [2].
2. The proposed core metadata elements can be found at [3]. As you can see
we did not include 'version' as a core element. Based on the previous
studies of terminology registries, we noticed the possible use of
'version/edition' for the purpose of:
* Managing local terminologies;
* Joint editing and annotation of local terminologies by experts;
* Sharing local terminologies; and
* Sharing a [KOS] vocabulary.
Among the nine terminology registries studied, 'Current version/edition'
were used by JIST and a JIST-based registry. BioPortal use a 'version' at
the manifestation level. (See example for ICD-10 (International
Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Clinical Modification) which has
two 'version's for downloading. The words '10th edition' are included in
the 'description'.)[4]
3. As far as the edition/version properties, we noticed that one can use:
bibo:edition and bibo:status. And, as Makx indicated, ADMS handles well
different levels and rad:version is for the Asset class.
Best,
Marcia Zeng
