ELPUB 2012 - Call for Participation
16th International Conference on Electronic Publishing
June 14-15, 2012, Guimarães, Portugal

Social Shaping of Digital Publishing:
Exploring the interplay between Culture and Technology

The Open Access movement has been a major driver of change in recent years in regard to scholarly communication. However, in other fields of inquiries and practices such as e-government or e-learning, the changes are also evident. These are, in part, driven by technological advances, but in most cases, technology and social practices interact in complex ways to create changes. The social and the mobile Web and linked data are creating exciting opportunities for research on digital publishing. Liquid publishing is on the more daring agendas. Digital Preservation is an issue that poses great challenges, still far from resolved. The legal issues, security and trust continue to deserve our full attention. We need new visualization techniques and Innovative Interfaces that keep pace with the global dimension of information. This is the current scenario, but what will follow? What technologies and social and communication paradigms will we be discussing in ten or twenty years?

Elpub 2012 will be focusing on the social shaping of digital publishing by exploring the interplay between culture and technology. This is why we are hosting the meeting in the European Capital of Culture for 2012.

ELPUB will feature plenary sessions with two keynote addresses and a panel debate, and parallel sessions for the presentation of blind peer-reviewed papers:

- Opening Keynote – Planned Obsolescence: Publishing, Technology, and the Future of the Academy - Kathleen Fitzpatrick
- Closing Keynote – Publishing in 2021 - António Câmara

- Debate Panel – “Academic E-books – Technological hostage or cultural redeemer?” – Peter Linde (Moderator), Kathleen Fitzpatrick, António Câmara, Delfim Leão and Karin Byström

- Parallel Session 1 – Digital Scholarship & Publishing / Special Archives

- Parallel Session 2 – Repositories & Libraries / Digital Scholarship & Publishing

- Parallel Session 3 – Future Solutions and innovations / Digital texts and Readings

- Parallel Session 4 – Future Solutions and innovations / Digital texts and Readings

The conference will also feature the presentation of 10 posters on recent work in progress in the area of electronic publishing.

ELPUB 2012 will not only bring together the latest developments in the area of electronic publishing, but will provide opportunities for you to establish contacts and to network with colleagues from several countries. ELPUB 2012 will be represented by authors from Algeria, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, The Netherlands, Turkey, UK and the USA.

For more information, please visit the conference Website at http://www.elpub.net or its programme at http://www.elpub.net/Elpub_2012/Programme.html.

The early bird registration date was extended to the 31st May so that you can take full advantage of it.
