To all: just to quickly introduce myself. I am a town and transport

strong interest in public realm design and produced the plan drawings
behind the Go Dutch visuals on London Cycling Campaign's website
(www.lcc.org.uk). I was introduced to this list by Rachel Aldred,
following a question to another e-mail group about whether there is a
causal link between investment in cycling infrastructure and more
cycling (as opposed to 'intentions' to cycle). I prefer Danish
infrastructure design, by the way....

Definitely visit the cycling embassy. It would be good if you can get
lots of pictures and maybe sketch some junctions--to see how the Danish
resolve (which they do) the achilles heel of segregated tracks, namely
junctions. If you can be cheeky and get hold of an electronic version of
their design manual, that would be simply amazing......
If you can find out what are the most effective junction designs:
- at priority junctions and
- at signal junctions
and describe how they work, this would, I'm sure, be incredibly helpful.
It would also help to find out how the old problem of vehicles turning
(our) right off the main carriageway is resolved: I think it's via
central right turn lanes, but maybe it isn't. In the UK, drivers are
more worried about holding up the vehicle behind than the safety of
cyclists on cycle tracks. Would this be defused by having right turn
lanes? I also particularly like the design of small side streets having
the footway and cycle track running across their mouths, without any
change of surfacing treatment.
Hope that's not too much to take on board!

I'm researching how cycling fits into urban lives in Inner London, so that'd be anything interesting really, from notable pieces of infrastructure, interesting examples of Danish cycling culture or just any notable bloggers/activists/campaigners that might want to meet up for an informal chat.
