CfP: Ageing Migrants - (Im)mobilities of Ageing
Workshop 13: IMISCOE 9th Annual Conference
University of Amsterdam
28-29 August 2012
Workshop Organisers:
Alistair Hunter (University of Edinburgh) & Oana Ciobanu (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa)
The mobilities turn in the social sciences has generated a rich new conceptual vocabulary for students of migration, but one must be careful not to overstate the novelty of the movements of people and things, nor to overlook fixity and friction, the less mobile and barriers to mobility. Both of these caveats are of particular relevance when considering the utility of the new mobilities paradigm for the study of ageing migrants. Is the new mobilities paradigm useful when studying the experiences of older migrants whose mobility is not new, or who are less mobile today than in the past? This workshop invites contributions from scholars who reflect on the utility of the mobilities paradigm in relation to ageing migrants. Following Cresswell's 2010 article 'Towards a politics of mobility', suggested themes for discussion include, but are not limited to:
- Motive Force: why do older migrants move?
- Route: what routes do older migrants take? At what scale – local / national / international?
- Experience: what does (im)mobility feel like for older people? Do experiences change over the life course? How do they adapt to new conditions?
- Friction: when and why does older migrants' mobility stop? What substitute forms of mobility do they develop (such as virtual mobility)?
We welcome theoretical or empirical contributions from across the social sciences. PhD students are encouraged to apply.
