i often use an old macgyver video to begin discussions around power,
culture and maps.

it is humourous, which may or may not work for your class.
in the video, macgyver steals a map in an arab town and then escapes the
town using the map in various way, none of which are 'normally' imagined
as 'uses of maps'.
macgyver explains that the map has information that can stop or start a
war -- an useful entry point into discussing how maps can be so powerful.
the stereotypical characters in the video also feed into discussions
about representation etc.
