Thanks for all the comments and thoughts on this, you have given me much food for thought.
Cornelius, I entirely agree with the point about not creating ever more records. But isn't it the nature of developer-led work that, due to time/budget constraints, we record while we can, then apply these findings to specific questions?
Some questions that might be addressed: Who built these structures, when and why? Why were these materials used and where were they sourced? How have they been subsequently adapted? What is the extent of the 'crash barrier' material? Is this common practice? Is it confined to certain areas? What does this say about contemporary attitudes to the countryside? There is, for example much protest locally about losing this area of countryside - but how 'pristine' is it really?. What is the relationship between these structures and motorway development in the area?
