Dear list members. 
It is a pleasure to send the official announcement of the II Encounter of filmmakers from Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and their Diasporas. This II edition gives continuity to the one that was held in Havana, last September. You can find information about participants and the final declaration in http://www.caribefilm.cult.cu/en/eventos.
 It was organized by the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase office in Havana. 
Last year experience was defined as "historic" by Danny Glover (one of the participants representing the African-American film Community). The Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase together with the Dominican Global Film Festival is organizing this second edition to take place in Santo Domingo from July 15th to 18th. Unfortunately we cannot cover the costs of accommodation and air tickets, but we will happily address personal official invitation letters to those wanting to come, in order to favor funds requests.

Cinema ABCD
II ENCOUNTER OF FILMMAKERS FROM AFRICA, BRAZIL, THE CARIBBEAN AND THEIR DIASPORAS
Santo Domingo, July 14th to 17th, 2012
	
ANNOUNCEMENT
TO:	FILMMAKERS, PRODUCERS, ACTORS, EXHIBITORS, REPRESENTATIVES OF DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES, EXECUTIVES FROM PUBLIC AND PRIVATE TV STATIONS, AUTHORITIES  FROM NATIONAL FILM INSTITUTIONS AND FILM PROMOTION ACTIVISTS  FROM AFRICA, BRAZIL, THE CARIBBEAN AND THEIR DIASPORAS:  
The I Encounter of Filmmaker from Africa, the Caribbean and their Diasporas was held in Havana, in September 2011, organized by the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase. The participants of this first Encounter, spanning nine (9) African countries and eighteen (18) countries in Latin America, North America and the Caribbean, agreed about the importance of giving continuity to this valuable space for debate, interchange of experiences, initiatives and action between filmmakers, film authorities, producers, distributors and academic specialists in audiovisual and film. Consequently, the participants of the I Encounter received with enthusiasm the following invitation, expressed in the event’s final declaration:

“Festival de Cine Global Dominicano (FCGD) and the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), on behalf of the Dominican people and the President of the Republic, in coordination with the Office of the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase is committed to making the second Encounter of Filmmakers from Africa, the Caribbean and their Diasporas in 2012 in the Dominican Republic.” 

Regarding the statement of the I Encounter’s final declaration that ascertains the need of: 
“A greater participation of Brazil and its filmmakers in these Encounters and their actions, taking into account the importance of African heritage in Brazilian identity”. 

And it also recognizes: 
“The contribution of the Meeting of Black Cinema of Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean, organized annually by the Afro-Carioca Film Centre, in an effort to make visible the work of these film industries, while valuing its experience as inspiration for the Encounter of Filmmakers of Africa, the Caribbean and their Diasporas”. 

This second space for interchange will be proclaimed as:
“II Encounter of Filmmakers from Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and their Diasporas (Cinema ABCD)”




Dear colleagues: 
As stated in the final statement of that first encounter: 
“In the identity of the Caribbean and their Diasporas is a, deep, transcendent and vital cultural footprint of the peoples of the African continent. Film, as a mosaic of all the arts, is the meeting point par excellence between the cultural values and aesthetic referents of the Caribbean and Africa.”

Based upon the need to maintain and develop the indispensable connection between our regions’ cinemas, and to establish functional and permanent links among them, allowing mutual enrichment, cooperation and joint action towards a stronger film production and a wider visibility, as well as, establishing a strong connection with the African-American film community: 

The office of the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase in Havana and the Festival de Cine Global Dominicano (FCGD) in Santo Domingo, with the approval of the President of the Dominican Republic, announce the II Encounter of Filmmakers from Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and their Diasporas (Cinema ABCD) to be held in Santo Domingo, from July 14th to 17th, 2012.  

Filmmakers, producers, exhibitors, representatives of distribution companies, executives from public and private TV companies, representatives from national film institutions, film promotion activists, critics and scholars from Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and their diasporas are welcome to take part in this second Encounter, together with representatives from institutions around the world, devoted to the support of cinema and audiovisual production in developing countries, as well as representatives from UNESCO and UNICEF. 

As in its first edition, the II Encounter of Filmmakers from Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and their Diasporas (Cinema ABCD) and its actions, will fulfill the statements of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and intercultural dialogue.  

The main objectives of the Second Encounter are:

1- To Reexamine the agreements of the I Encounter’s final statement and make a review of the state of its resulting actions.
2- To continue the dialogue, debate and coordination about the main issues affecting the development of our regions’ cinema, emphasizing the connection between filmmakers and film industries in our countries, and the efforts to increase their work’s space and visibility.
3- To favor the cooperation links among the cinema of our countries and African-American filmmakers, producers and actors.
4- To favor a wider presence of the productions in commercial exhibition, distribution and broadcasting spaces in Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean, as well as in Europe and the United States. 
5-To motivate the knowledge and research about our indigenous cinema in academic spaces of our regions






6- To assess the impact of national cinema in the construction of a historical memory and in the strengthening of our national identities.
7. To analyze new production capabilities in Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean. Dominican Republic as an experience in progress. 
8-To asses mechanisms for the implementation and development of the UNESCO Project “Cameras of diversity” in countries of Africa, the Caribbean and in Brazil, as stated in the I Encounter’s final declaration.
9- To interchange experiences and construct projects for professional qualification in the different areas of audiovisual production in our regions. 
10. Co-production and integration projects as alternatives for audiovisual creation and distribution. Conjuncting access to funding sources.
11- Film production and exhibition for and by children and adolescents. Cinema as a tool for the defense of children’s rights.

	The Multi-state TV channel TeleSur will support the news coverage of the event. 
	An African and Caribbean film Showcase will be held in Santo Domingo, with the attendance of some of the movies’ authors. 
	The official program and panel agenda of the event will be informed in a suitable date prior to the event.
