EXHIBIT IRELAND: ethnographic collections in Irish museums
Séamas Ó Síocháin, Pauline Garvey, Adam Drazin (eds)
Published 1 May 2012
Exhibit Ireland introduces the reader to key collections of ethnographic objects held in museums in Ireland, north
and south, including the National Museum of Ireland, the Ulster Museum and the Ulster Folk and Transport
Museum. As well as being the most up-to-date outline of the history of these little-studied collections, it critiques the notions of the categorisation of these heritage artefacts in the European and global context.
Through the twentieth century, while other European countries were either foregrounding colonial-period collections as global heritage, and building folk museums which celebrated notions of national culture, in much of Ireland comparable objects were largely ignored and stored out of the public eye.
This book explores the distinctive political charge implicit in these artefacts, while arguing for the importance of exposing and exhibiting the beauty, tragedy, violence, craftsmanship and poignancy which they and their stories can be seen to embody.
