Hi Joe and colleagues
I just wanted to say how vital and important this event will be. Tourism has not gained greatly in depth enquiry over the years, sac eg Selwyn [ed 2010], Andrews [2011] and some other great exceptions: 'the tourist', 'doing tourism' as the focus.
good stuff, all encouagement to a propely critical and generous engagement - an the panned publication

"Excursions: a one-day colloquium for pre-fieldwork anthropologists working on tourism"
St. Antony's College, Oxford University, Friday 29th June, 9.30 pm - 6 pm.
This event aims to bring together anthropologists (or social geographers/sociologists/etc using qualitative methods) who are working towards fieldwork concerned with tourism. Each speaker will present their project and/or give focus to one element of it (theory, methods, ethics, etc) in no more than thirty minutes. This will be followed by half an hour of questions and comments from the group, as led by a respondent. It is hoped that, through the scrutiny of peers, any lacunae (and the potentials) of each of our projects' will be revealed. The purpose of the event is not to give and receive definitive answers, but rather to suggest novel avenues of inquiry to one another. An emphasis will be on constructive criticism of our works' in progress.
Speakers for the event must submit an abstract of their project, a short CV, and a brief description of their proposed presentation by Sunday the 3rd of June. Each speaker will receive the next's abstract and statement of intent so as to enable concise and constructive discussion on the day. Since projects are recognised as works in progress, minor alterations to topics can be made after selection.
The event is funded by St. Antony's college. Each of the four speakers will be given up to £100 towards travel and accommodation. Non-speaking participants are more than welcome, particularly if they are working towards fieldwork in tourist zones. Lunch and coffee will be offered to all participants, and a subsidized dinner will be available to speakers. All non-speaking participants must book their seat by the 15th June.
The event is one of two; upon returning from fieldwork, each speaker will be invited to present their results' at a second, larger conference, with the ultimate objective being to bring our articles together into a co-edited book.
