Dear All
Please be advised that this year's Armitage Lecture will take place on
Thursday 6th December 2012, venue to be decided.
*/Methods for Causal Inference/***
*Prof. Els Goetghebeur*
*Ghent University*
*Els Goetghebeur* is *Professor of Statististics at Ghent University*
<https://biblio.ugent.be/person/801001106160>, Belgium. For the past 5
years she was also adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of
Biostatistics of the Harvard School of Public Health (US). Previous
appointments include a visiting lecturer position at Stanford University
(US), and faculty positions at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicine (UK), Maastricht University (NL) and the Limburgs University
Centre (B).
Her research focuses on methods for causal inference generally, on
survival analysis and missing data problems, the design and analysis of
(sequentially) randomised trials and multiple comparisons problems (for
genetic data). (Information taken from the German Academy of Sciences
Leopoldina website).

/Also appearing as guest speakers are:/
/Dr. Vanessa Didelez – Dept of Mathematics @ Bristol University/
Her interests are in the statistical modelling of complex - high
dimensional as well as dynamic - systems based on graphical models.
Applications are for example in epidemiology, forensics, genetics or
bio-medical research in general. In particular, my research deals with
using graphical models for statistical causal inference in such systems,
i.e. when assessing the effect of interventions is the target of
inference. This also has a philosophical touch to it - what is and how
do we formalise causality?
