Hi Kate,
Apologies for not replying sooner, manic time at work!
My research focuses upon early-modern, social, cultural and religious history; in particular the confessional and cultural roots of incidents of demonic possession and witchcraft trials. My doctoral research investigated incidents of the above in early modern Lancashire; from the reformation, into and beyond the Glorious Revolution. Taking a more chronologically expansive point of view enabled me to examine the evolution of supernatural beliefs in the local community, as well as how through their interpretation and representation at a national level they reflected and contributed to politico-religious debates.
I'm currently working to extend the chronological range further into the nineteenth & twentieth century.
Best,
D

Hi Debbie
that's very useful, thank you, I'll follow up! And yes, if you have any
contacts who are particularly motivated by a sense of connection with this
period it would be great if you could put us in touch.
Interesting about your research interest in trials too - contemporary trials?
I've worked on memory as a general theme, and on the early modern as a
period, and this is part of an attempt to put the pieces together.
many thanks
Kate

Hi Kate,
I suggest you contact Dr Charles Esdaille at the University of Liverpool,
historian and enthusiastic member of the Sealed Knot re-enactment society.
I'm sure he'd be willing to help.
I may also be able to put you in contact with some practitioners who would be
willing to discuss their sense of being part of a tradition, ancestry ect.
Let me know if I can be of any help,
Best
Debbie

Dear Kate,
I'd suggest contacting Geraldine Beskin at The Atlantis Bookshop in Museum
Street, London.
She's probably in contact with more practitioners than anyone else and may
well be able to put your students in contact with magical practitioners
willing to be interviewed.
Here are her contact details:

Good luck with the project!

Subject: [ACADEMIC-STUDY-MAGIC] magical memories of the past?
Dear all
I hope this query isn't too far off the list's interests, but as it is
clearly an eclectic and helpful list I thought I'd give it a try!
I'm running a research project on memory in early modern England, which
includes as one of its themes the question of how the period is remembered
today in contexts outside the academy - re-enactment societies, historical
novels, and so on. It seems to me that one way some people might feel a
particular connection with or interest in this period is via witchcraft, and
the European witch persecutions. This could include those Wiccans who
identify with or trace origins through the accused witches, as well as no
doubt other kinds of connection I haven't thought of.
So I am wondering: can anyone put me in contact with people who might be
willing to be interviewed by two very nice mature undergraduates of mine, on
the general topic of how they connect with or remember the seventeenth
century? Magically or otherwise ... We are London-based, so ideally within
striking distance of London, although email interviews would also be a
possibility.
(Of course I'm happy to provide more information about the research - contact
me directly - I don't want to clutter the list too much!)
Many thanks for any ideas
Kate
