That's an odd error. It's almost like the system can't create ~/adam directory.
Do standalone kappa tasks work? eg
$ kappa
$ stats $KAPPA_DIR/comwest
and does ICL work
$icl
icl> kappa
icl> stats $KAPPA_DIR/comwest
