Two PhD Studentships, funded by the Higher Education Academy
Both studentships are for three years and cover Home/EU tuition fees and a maintenance grant of £13,590 per annum (plus an additional £850 per annum to support research training needs).
Studentship 1: 'Articulating learning and employability through experience'
Based at Keele University
This studentship will explore how HE students' engagement in different forms of work experience contributes to their leaner skills and employability. As students are encouraged to take part in different activities, the concern is that these activities become 'tick box' activities, with an emphasis on having had experience, rather than what can learnt through these activities. This studentship will evaluate the contribution of undergraduate students’ engagement in paid employment, placements, internships and volunteering to their employability; how students articulate what they have learnt from their experiences; and, how these experiences can be incorporated into students’ formal learning.
The studentship is open to candidates with a social science background. Applicants should have a minimum 2:1 class honours degree and either a MA in research methods or relevant experience.

Studentship 2: ‘The Impact of Different Forms of International Student Mobility on Learning and Transitions to Employment’
Based at the University of Surrey
Over recent years, various new initiatives have emerged, to encourage UK students to spend some of their degree programme overseas - for example, through ‘dual degree’ programmes, exchanges, short visits, and work placements. Nevertheless, we know little about their strengths and weaknesses in preparing young adults for employment when they leave university, or about their impact on student learning. The Higher Education Academy-funded project is intended to address this gap in our knowledge and generate new and important data on the impact of different types of programmes to encourage student mobility.
The studentship is open to candidates with: a master’s level degree in sociology, education, human geography or a related subject; experience of using qualitative research methods (particularly interviewing); and excellent oral and written communication skills.
