Collaborative Urbanism: A Multi-Disciplinary Discussion on the Future of Urban Development in the UK
14th June – MADE ‘Centre for Place-Making’, Birmingham
Co-organisers:
Colin Lorne, University of Birmingham ([log in to unmask])
Jonathan Clarke, University of Birmingham ([log in to unmask])
The future for British cities is uncertain. With the urban renaissance now a distant memory, there is an absence of clear direction for new urban development. Against a backdrop of austerity and recession, NPPF and Localism, this event seeks to consider the future of cities and how we can generate new forms of urban development. What opportunities and possibilities for change, re-use and renewal might be possible? With growth being an overriding agenda for the UK, what impact does this have upon issues of sustainability and good design?
With this in mind, this will be the first event in a series which emphasises collaboration between stakeholders interested in the urban setting, and brings together a network of practitioners and researchers into an open, relaxed environment. It will draw upon issues of design, governance, regeneration, sustainability and resilience.
The event features three key speakers from different professional backgrounds, who will each set out their perspective on the future of our cities, in a short presentation (approx. 20 minutes), before opening up the discussion to all attendees. Speakers for the event include:
• Mike Raco – Professor at UCL, interested in urban governance, sustainable cities, and the changing nature of welfare states
• Nick Ebbs - Chief Executive of Blueprint (Igloo), undertaking sustainable mixed-use urban regeneration in the East Midlands
• Charles Holland – Architect and Director of FAT Architecture, internationally renowned for their innovative and challenging projects in architecture, cities and design
Refreshments will be provided and drinks will take place at a nearby pub following the event to continue discussions.
