Subject: Call for Contributions - "Textual Histories" - 15 May 2012

Dear SHARP-L,

For the spring 2013 issue of the bilingual open-access peer-reviewed journal Mémoires du Livre (http://memoires.erudit.org/), submissions are invited for a special issue that I'm guest-editing on the theme of "Textual Histories" (« Histoires Textuelles »). The call for papers follows. It's an inclusive theme that I hope will invite contributions from a range of periods and will incite some interesting discussion around issues of reprinting, remediation, and reception.

If you have any questions about this call for contributions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

All the best,

Yuri

Call for papers

Volume 4, Number 2, 2013
"Textual histories"
Guest-edited by Yuri Cowan, Ghent University

Our understanding of texts is shaped by the material forms in which they come down to us; multiple factors influence the transmission of texts across time, and readers therefore experience past texts in diverse forms that often share little resemblance with the forms in which past generations received them. The process which Randall McLeod calls "transformission" occurs every time a text is printed, reprinted, repurposed, or remediated, and the material form taken by a text at any given time has important consequences for the ways in which that text is understood by contemporary and future readers. Every text has a material history—in many cases a long and rich one—dictated by the cultural, aesthetic, and economic choices of authors, publishers, printers, editors, illustrators.

This special issue therefore invites submissions that consider the material and cultural expression of texts at diverse times. Articles may examine, for instance, the reprinting of canonical texts; the resurrection of neglected texts in new forms; the reinterpretation of texts by later printers and illustrators; the history of editions and of interventions by later editors; the publication and binding of books published in part or in serial; the internal logic of the Sammelband; forgeries and piracies; the impact of subsequent changes in typographical or paratextual fashion on a work published in an earlier period. Case studies that concentrate on single or multiple instances of a particular text or book are welcome, as are studies that offer conclusions about the history of a corpus of texts.

A secondary objective of this special issue will be to consider to what extent the reconstitution of texts at different times is bound up with their reception—whether the history of texts is also in some way a history of reading and readerships. Submissions examining the relationship between the material forms assumed by a given text and the reception of that text are therefore particularly welcome.

Article proposals approximately twenty lines (250 words) in length should be emailed before May 15, 2012 to Yuri Cowan ([log in to unmask]), guest editor of this special number. A response will be given by May 30, 2012 following evaluation of the proposal by the editorial committee. Proposed articles that have been accepted must be submitted by October 15, 2012, at which time they will be peer-reviewed. Articles recommended for publication must be re-submitted by January 15, 2013 for publication in spring 2013.

Appel de textes

Volume 4, Numéro 2, 2013
« Histoires textuelles »
