2 Scottish Government/ESRC Collaborative Studentships
Applications are invited for two PhD studentships funded collaboratively by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Doctoral Training Centre on behalf of the ESRC. The studentships, which will commence by 1st October 2012, will be held in the Urban Studies subject area within the School of Social and Political Sciences.
Urban Studies is one of Europe's leading centres of urban and housing research. It promotes both disciplinary or inter-disciplinary research on the economic, social and governance aspects of regional, urban, neighbourhood and housing issues. There is also a strong interest in the broader public policies and professional practices required to create the conditions for more equitable outcomes for citizens.
Funding will be available for a 3 year PhD programme and will cover fees, research expenses and an annual stipend of £13,590.
The two studentships are:
Expanding Horizons? Investigating the Commonwealth Games 2014 Legacy for Young People in the East End of Glasgow
(Supervisors: Prof Ade Kearns & Dr Mhairi Mackenzie) Urban studies - Expanding Horizons
Understanding the Impacts of Welfare Reform on Equality Groups in Scotland (Supervisors: Dr Charlotte Pearson & Prof Moira Munro) Urban studies - Understand impacts of Welfare Reform
Applicants should have a first degree and a Masters degree in a social science discipline (students due to complete a Masters programme prior to October 2012 are encouraged to apply). Please note that qualifications/experience should meet ESRC requirements for research training.

Closing Date
The closing date for applications is 4pm on 27th April with interviews to be held with short-listed candidates on 16th and 17th May.
Application Process
You must submit two (2) applications in parallel to be considered for an ESRC Studentship:
1. A standard online application for Postgraduate study
2. An ESRC studentship application pack (details and forms below).
ESRC studentship application pack includes
i) A full CV (including details of your master's dissertation where applicable)
i) A 2 page summary of the reasons for applying for the area of research, including relevant skills and knowledge.
iii) Two references, at least one of which should be an academic reference.
iv) A SGSSS Equal Opportunities Monitoring form
