I am pleased to announce the publication of Gamut: Journal of the Music
Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic, volume 4 (2011).
Its 11 entries showcase a broad array of topics by a variety of
scholar-writers. It includes:
-- 4 stand-alone articles, on Schumann's "progressive trends" in
variation form; the applicability of Donald Grantham's Fantasy
Variations to the core theory curriculum; the interaction of Classical
sonata models and Sonata Theory in Liszt's Faust Symphony; and "multiply
directed moments" in Brahms's "Schön war, das ich dir weihte."
-- 5 more articles under the banner of the Festschrift for Allen Forte
(Part 3), including a previously unpublished essay on two Gershwin
songs, by the honoree himself; plus essays on Fauré's influence on two
early songs by Copland, and Schoenberg's influence on Webern's five
Dehmel Lieder; and two large documentary studies: one on Schenker's
first "Americanization" in the 1920s-30s, at the Institute of Musical
Art, and the other on a redating of Schoenberg's announcement of his
twelve-tone method.
-- 2 reviews, of Miguel Roig-Francolí's Understanding Post-Tonal Music,
and Anthology of Post-Tonal Music; and of Timothy Johnson's Foundations
of Diatonic Theory.
