Spot on Oli. In fact this point was driven home with some force by Alain de Botton in a talk on R4 a year or so ago when he suggested that the arts and humanities should look to the example of the natural sciences when it comes to public engagement and making a case not just for support but for legitimacy.

Science PhDs are lucky in that they get paid. That's frequently not the case for postgrads in the humanities and social sciences, many of whom do valuable work and get charged fees for the privilege.
As an aside, the fact that science PhDs get paid (and the comparatively generous funding that science gets in general) might be in part down to public engagement helping to ensure a continued flow of public money.
Just a thought.
