Dear Keith,
I don't know if this helps - seems like a bit of a long shot - but Pinel is
a surname of Channel Islands (particularly Jersey) origin. We've got quite
a lot of them here.

I have come across the phrase "Pinel and Gravel" on some old borehole logs
from iron mining country in Cumbria. Does anyone know the meaning of the
word "pinel"?
