though i've never seen a middlevil example of a book press (save for this
one), there's nothing particularly sophisticated about the technology for
building suchlike --forms of "worm gears" were certainly in use in things like
reading stands from a rather early date, and in wine presses from at least the
later M.A.
and, i would think that a book press would be a useful thing to have around
the place when pages were made out of parchment (and binding boards of wood)
which "breathed" in moisture and were so subject to swelling and warping.
still, as i say, i don't recall ever having come across one before.
