Frontlines of Research Seminars
The first of a series of seminars organised at the Frontline Club in London by the Media School of Bournemouth University takes place at 6.00pm on Thursday 10th May. At these informal events Bournemouth researchers will present some of their work and invite discussion of its implications for the practice of journalists and for other stakeholders in some major areas of policy and practice. Entry is free and all are welcome, but registration is essential:

10 May seminar: Emotional news: journalists, trauma and audiences.
Gavin Rees, Director of the Dart Centre Europe, and Barry Richards, Professor of Public Communication in the Media School at Bournemouth University, will talk about the implications for training of their research on emotional literacy in journalism. Stephen Jukes, Dean of the Media School and former Head of Global News at Reuters, will lead a discussion on the place of objectivity in emotionally-aware journalism, in the age of social media. Stuart Allan, Bournemouth’s Professor of Journalism, Dr. Caitlin Patrick and Dr. Einar Thorsen will analyse some recent examples of news imagery in relation to trauma, particularly coverage of the recent capture and death of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. This will be of interest to all those concerned with the management of difficult emotions in the production of news, and the emotional impact of news content on audiences.

MeCCSA is the subject association for the field of media, communication and cultural studies in UK Higher Education. Membership is open to all who teach and research these subjects in HE institutions, via either institutional or individual membership. The field includes film and TV production, journalism, radio, photography, creative writing, publishing, interactive media and the web; and it includes higher education for media practice as well as for media studies.
