Hi Graham

Thanks very much for this. It's comforting to know that we're all in the same boat with this situation.

And it's been very interesting to read what others have been experiencing with BLDSS. We will probably get put on it in May, so we haven't experienced any of these difficulties yet. Something to look forward to, I think!

In response (delayed due to annual leave) We were approached to take part in the pre-visioning of BLDSS and what we might like the service to achieve - eventually. One of the suggestions we made was direct requesting - providing that submission could not happen without the person first having to search the local catalogue; eg: a technical solution that means the request process could not be completed without passing through a local search step (not dissimilar to the word recognition/typing process we go through on some websites that is used to filter out bulk mailers). It was something we thought we would like when asked to envision the future. As high volume users of DSC it is in our interests to contribute to service development planning when invited to help maintain an efficient, viable and useful service. Sometimes what you 'envision' may not always prove to be 'right'!
The concerns are obvious - not the least of which is that BLDSS closes the market place to other ILL software providers; but also a 'big' barrier to overcome would be copyright compliance - both declarations and e-signature; and just how robust the local search would be.
At present, although our ILL process is numerically unlimited on a per user basis, we do have a finite budget. So it is important that we train users to search locally first, before completing an ILL request form; that the ILL team continue to check requests before submitting to BL (something our ILL software makes very easy; and yes around 15% are cancelled due to local availability!); and that excessive use is identified via regular reporting and the Subject Librarians follow-up with the identified high-users to ensure that the service is not being abused; to identify possible new areas of study or research or changes in teaching focus; or as a means of identifying gaps in our provision.
BLDSS is not yet ready to do direct requests, and when it does go live it may not conform to a useful and compliant procedure. However, it might provide an opportunity for some staff rather than all users. I just do not know and, like you all, am waiting on developments before we actually consider what we do in the future.
Cheers
Graham

Hi Beth

I second Mark's concern here. Around 20% of the requests that we get from students and staff are for items already in stock, so we're not even considering letting users request directly. We simply don't have the money to support this.

At their roadshow event in Glasgow last year, the BL folk did say that Plymouth University was in favour of this option, so maybe Graham can advise on how to control this?

Best wishes

Hi Beth,

another issue would be the fact that they are bypassing the library collection and potentially requesting items held at their library. How would you ensure they don't do this?

Kind regards,
Mark

We're trying to plan ahead...and I wondered, are any of you thinking of letting your students register and request directly through BLDSS (when that bit goes live)?
(or have any of you decided not to)?
When I try to think about how it might work, I'm struggling (if they register and request library privilege - how do we sort out a copyright signature, and if the request fails, will we have to type it manually into our own systems to request it from somewhere else?...).
So I wondered if anyone had thought it through, and come up with an answer that might work?
Happy to summarise for the list, if there is an answer out there.
Thanks,
Beth
