Dear All,
This is urgent: deadline next Monday, 23rd April.
NERC is conducting a review of postgraduate
skills gaps, to guide "investment in training and
developing postgraduates and will help [NERC] ensure
that there are people with the right mix of skills
and knowledge available to employers of the future".
The aim is to update the 2010 review. There is
an online survey, the link to which is on the page
http://www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/available/postgrad/skillsreview/review2012.asp?cookieConsent=A
The British Geophysical Association (BGA)
along with PESGB and the GeolSoc Petroleum Group
identified impending shortages of MSc-trained geoscientists
in the petroleum industry and reported these to the House
of Commons Science and Technology Committee. The
withdrawal of NERC funding for MSc studentships was
a factor in our conclusions.
Hence we are anxious that a representative sample
of UK employers and trainers of postgraduate students
should complete this survey to make clear to NERC what
the present situation is. So please do fill this
form in if you are able (mind the 23rd April deadline).
The questions focus in turn on a number of sub-disciplines
and ask for evidence of skill gaps decreasing, increasing
or remaining the same as in 2010.
If you would like the BGA to go on pursuing NERC and
Government for changes and/or greater investment in
postgraduate training in geosciences, and you can
help, with information or contacts, please do let me know.
I am still working with the GeolSoc and PESGB on
this on behalf of the BGA.
Regards,
Sheila Peacock.
