**Background**
The Joint IDP Profiling Service (JIPS) was established in 2009 by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Norwegian Refugee Council's Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (NRC/IDMC), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to provide support for country teams in IDP Profiling processes. With funding from the European Commission, UNHCR, NRC-IDMC and the DRC, JIPS has worked – to date - with more than a dozen operations around the world on IDP Profiling processes.
JIPS is currently hosted by UNHCR Geneva and consists of four staff.
Since its creation, JIPS has focused on improving the availability of location disaggregated data as well as data related to gender and age. This is done through remote and direct field support missions in order to set up methodologies and tools and build capacity for profiling of IDP situations. JIPS is mostly valued for its interagency and technical nature facilitating the building of consensus in country operations on the need for profiling of IDP situations and joint ownership of results. In addition, JIPS advocates for IDP Profiling at country and global levels by raising awareness of IDP Profiling in different events, trainings and workshops.
