Dear all
I am just working on a new 15 credit module - Professional Experience - which will consist of a work placement (25 - 30 hours) where the student will design and deliver a "project," coupled with planning and reflection. It is in early stages and I plan for the module to be delivered for the first time in 2013/14.
If anyone is working on, or has experience of anything similar, I'd like to hear from you.
Best wishes
Samantha

Hi Jeanne/Vanessa/Gill
Our University is moving to 20 Credit Modules, and many of our programmes are using the re-validation process to introduce work placement modules, so I too would be very interested to see what other research is out there. I came across this piece of recent research undertaken within the Engineering Department at the University of Leicester - published by HECSU
Placements and academic performance (Winter 09/10)
The role of work-integrated learning in academic performance. Is there correlation between industrial placements and degree performance? Mendez, R., Rona, Dr.A (2009/2010) HECSU
"The findings illustrate a positive association between placements and improved academic performance whilst also suggesting that year 2 academic performance is a better indicator of likely academic performance."
I hope you find it useful.

I'd love to see your research Vanessa, as well as any other replies you get Jeanne.
We are working on a publication detailing a sample work related learning module, with some emphasis on designing your placement experience and making prior learning and expectations clear. Some reference to research on this area would be helpful.
Many thanks
Gill

Hi Jaenne
I have done a small, internal, unpublished study, undertaking interviews with a group of six students undertaking a 12 month placement in London Met Business School. It covers there ideas pre placement and towards the end of the placement. It is very focussed on the Business School, but I can send it on if it would be of interest?
Best wishes
Vanessa

Hi
I've been looking for research on student expectations and concerns prior to doing a placement and haven't come across very much so far that either addresses this aspect alone or as part of reviewing placement experience overall (except work from Loughborough http://www.engcetl.ac.uk/downloads/research/students/yussuf/yussuf_ahmed_2006_aset.pdf). Can anybody point me to anything? I'd be happy to collate responses and post back to this list if other people are interested.
Thank you
Jeanne

Subject: Psychology of careers outreach
Hi,
Can anyone help a colleague of mine:
Does anyone know of any research into the psychology of careers
outreach, in particular research that considers people's reaction to
careers/jobs coming up at social events where people are not expecting
to find them.
UKRC has taken over WISE and are looking at a range of ideas to develop
WISE and one is attendance at events which attract girls but are not
careers events. EG Clothes Show. This has been tried in past in UK
local pilots aimed at BME and the attendance had mixed impact.
Many thanks
Sue
