April 2012
Message from the Executive Director
CCDS' new strategic plan “Research on issues that affect us all” (2012 -2017) has been finalized and approved by the CCDS Board at the February 2012 meeting. The strategic plan (the Plan) is the result of collaborative work of the CCDS Board, staff, and committees over the last two years. The strategic plan is the framework for the development of detailed implementation plan and a monitoring mechanism for implementation and tracking progress.
Under the Plan, CCDS' staff and programmatic committees are jointly working on details for overall program development, while the Executive Committee is taking the lead in identification of the Board actions under this new strategic plan.
The Plan will be released to the public in April 2012 and detailed implementation plans (staff, committee and board levels) will be finalized before summer.
We look forward to new partnerships, new people joining our committees and organization.
Thank you to many who support our work in different ways!
- Olga Krassioukova-Enns
Recipients of CCDS Small Grants Announced
CCDS would like to congratulate the recipients of the 2011 CCDS Small Grants program - Nancy Viva Davis Halifax and Brenda Rossow-Kimball.
Nancy Viva Davis Halifax's proposal, Women’s Stories: Aging, disability and homelessness, will use photovoice and focus groups to explore the lived experiences of women with disabilities who are homeless and aging.
Brenda Rossow-Kimball's proposal, Creating a Culturally Inclusive Home will explore the meaning of Aboriginal culture with a group of Aboriginal adults with intellectual disabilities who live in non-Aboriginal group home settings to determine the best ways to create culturally inclusive living environments.
CCDS thanks all who submitted applications for the Small Grants Program. CCDS would like to extend its gratitude to the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities Foundation their ongoing support of the program.

Livable and Inclusive Communities
The Livable and Inclusive Communities Project, is CCDS' most recent contribution to the organization's work in the area of aging and disability, is nearing completion.
On February 21st and 22nd 2012, CCDS held its second inter-provincial forum with seven Working Group representatives from all four regions in which the project operated – Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario. The focus of the forum was to enable the representatives to share their own experiences in working with the LIC Concept Model and Discussion Guide, and to network with each other.
The major product of this project is the LIC Concept Model and Discussion Guide, which was developed with significant input from all of our ten working groups. The Concept Model explains the ideas behind a livable and inclusive community. The Discussion Guide has been designed to facilitate discussions that a group of people may have in order to ensure that any initiatives they are planning for contribute to a livable and inclusive community.
Please visit the project website at: http://disabilitystudies.ca/licproject/<http://disabilitystudies.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=df5d9ac8ba28f343cbc6a6135&id=671af71df3&e=b28e49ed3a>. There you can find information about the project, the Concept Model and the Discussion Guide.
Other recent CCDS activities in the area of aging and disability included the participation by Executive Director, Olga Krassioukova-Enns, in a roundtable on economic and social priorities for Canadian seniors hosted by the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State for Seniors.
Disability, Development and Diversity
The Disability, Development and Diversity Project was completed in December, 2011. The major product of this project is educational material for middle years teachers and students in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Raising Awareness: A Toolkit for All Middle Years Educators - New Ways of Looking at Disability Across the Curriculum introduces new ways of looking at disability. The goal of the Toolkit is to promote the idea that people with disabilities are deserving and equal members of our society. The Toolkit has been distributed to all school divisions throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan, as well as to teacher resource libraries in both provinces.
Please visit the project’s website at: http://disabilitystudies.ca/ddd-home/<http://disabilitystudies.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=df5d9ac8ba28f343cbc6a6135&id=e2a73748e5&e=b28e49ed3a>. There you will find some information about the project as well as the Toolkit and other resources. The Toolkit can be downloaded for free, or printed copies can be purchased from CCDS.
Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities in Ukraine
There is growing interest in Ukraine with regards to disability issues and inclusive initiatives by government, community organizations, universities and other sectors. The most significant drivers of this increased interest in inclusion are:
* The pressure on governments and communities by parents of children with disabilities for increased supports.
* The leadership and commitment by disability stakeholder groups.
* Increasing expectations from the international community with regards to inclusion, especially related to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
* The recognition by the Ukrainian society of the importance of inclusion.
The project is entering its fifth and last year, during which the main focus will be on further increasing the capacity of Ukrainian project stakeholders to apply and sustain the processes to support inclusive policy frameworks to promote inclusion of children with disabilities in schools and communities.
CCDS is proud that this project contributes to these efforts and continues to be a catalyst for positive and systemic changes. CCDS to host two panels at the Canadian Disability Studies Association Annual Conference
From May 30th-June 1st, Wilfred Laurier University is hosting the 2012 Canadian Disability Studies Association (CDSA) annual conference as part of the 2012 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. CCDS is participating in this conference by hosting two panels.
The first panel will be comprised of directors representing six Disability Studies programs in Canada: Ryerson University, University of Calgary, University of Manitoba, University of Windsor, University of Winnipeg, and York University.
