DESIGN HISTORY SOCIETY ESSAY PRIZE 2012
CALL FOR ENTRIES
Submissions are invited for the Design History Society Essay Prize, established in 1997 in order to maintain high standards in Design History in Higher Education.
The competition is open to any student on a BA or MA course in which Design History is a component. Entrants must be nominated by a tutor. Undergraduate entries are limited to within the UK and Ireland only. Postgraduate submissions are on an international basis. All essays must be written in English. Essays should be posted as two non-returnable photocopies; postgraduate submissions from outside the UK ONLY may be sent as a PDF. Essays received after the June deadline will be returned.
The Prize includes:
• A bursary of £300 given by the Design History Society
• One year’s membership of the Design History Society (includes subscription to The Journal of Design History)
• Free place at DHS conference ‘The Material Culture of Sport: Design/History/Identity’ University of Brighton 13-15 September 2012
• £100 worth of Oxford University Press publications
• 5 Paperbacks in the Oxford History of Art series.

Submission Guidelines
In order to obtain the highest standards for the Design History Society Essay Prize 2012, each submission must be nominated by a professional in the field.
Consideration should be given to the following selection criteria:
1. Initial selection criteria should reflect the internal assessment requirements of the nominating Institution: for example, an essay graded ‘First Class’ Honours, or of MA standard.
2. The following attributes should be present in the every essay selected for submission, both undergraduate and post-graduate.
Originality
The essay should demonstrate a mature and novel approach to issues, themes, and discourses currently relevant in the field of Design History.
Research
The essay should demonstrate excellence in terms of breadth of research combining a good balance of
primary and secondary sources.
Method
Methods of research and delivery should reflect the interdisciplinary nature
of design history. For example, an ideal essay would include one or some of
the following:
• an awareness of varieties of historical approaches (social, economic, cultural etc.)
• knowledge of ideological perspectives (Marxism, feminism, etc.)
• a range of discipline-specific methodologies (archaeology,anthropology, structuralism, etc.)
3. The essay should:
• be well structured and include an excellent degree of critical evaluation of source material;
• have a balanced and logical argument; and
• have an articulate and well-evidenced conclusion.
