The Msc International Childhood Studies in the Department of Geography, Environment and Development Studies, Birkbeck College, University of London, is open for applications for full time and part time study from October 2012.
Ths Msc has core modules on the impacts of globalisation on children's lives and cultures of parenting; on how to do research with children; and on how the social sciences and humanities conceptualise children and childhood, e.g. how does the infant become human; how does space and time change practices of childhood and how do children's lives intersect with 'race', gender and class?
The programme is convened by Karen Wells who is the author of Childhood in Global Perspective (Poity 2009). Lectures are also given by visiting lecturers who are experts in their field. Seminar groups are small and led by experienced childhood scholars. All classes are taught in the evenings.
Students can take option modules from international development, environmental studies, psychosocial studies and law.
