Hi everyone,
My name is Tam Sanger and I work at Anglia Ruskin University. Some of you will have heard me mention what I’m about to talk about at the Gender group business meeting on Friday. Judith Mudd, chief exec of BSA, asked me a while ago to take a look at the BSA’s language guidelines as gender identity is not included (see below). I work in trans studies which is why she approached me but I thought it would make more sense to get feedback on this from the Gender Study Group rather than it being something put together from one person’s perspective. There is precedent for this as the Race and Ethnicity document for example was written up by the BSA Race Study Group. There is a Sex and Gender set of guidelines we could add to – see the website – or we could write something new if we felt this was necessary. Please let me know if you’d be interested in getting involved and we can set up a group, or, if you’d rather, just send me your thoughts on what should be included.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Tam

Hi Tam,
I received the enquiry below some time ago and have promised to update our language guidelines with appropriate text relating to gender reassignment.
I know that you have done quite a bit of work in this area and I wonder if you could help me by reviewing the Language Guidelines and suggesting appropriate additions? You’ll find the current guidelines here: http://www.britsoc.co.uk/equality/.
Also, I am currently working with Bernie Hayes and our intern Hai Nguyen on the Mapping Sociology Project. A question that has arisen is how to approach transgender / gender reassignment appropriately when we are collecting / representing data on sex i.e. what options should we offer when we survey the membership? Male/Female but do we add other? Or perhaps prefer not to specify? Transgender? What would you advise?
Happy New Year!!
Judith

Dear Adam,
You contacted our Communications Officer recently regarding our ‘Language and the BSA’ documents, specifically asking about resources relating to sexuality and gender reassignment language.
This is to let you know that I have requested a review of the document with a view to adding something specific since the current material does not cover this area.
Thank you for pointing this out to us and my apologies for the delay in letting you know.
Kind regards,
Judith Mudd

Hello Tony
Not sure if you’re the right person to ask about this, but here goes …
I’m an editor for The Open University, specialising in Social Sciences texts and courses.
I often use the BSA resources relating to language (In particular, the ‘Language and the BSA’ documents, located here: http://www.britsoc.co.uk/equality/)
While these are very useful in covering Sex & gender; Race & ethnicity; and Non-disablist language, there doesn’t seem to be any resources relating to sexuality or gender reassignment language.
Are these missing or on another page or …
Hope you are the right person to ask for this,
Regards
