Here in Canada, the highest award for poetry, somewhat pathetically, is
called the Governor General's Award. Most of my favorite Canadian poets,
such as Gerry Gilbert and bill bissett, have never won it. Another poet I
like, Leonard Cohen, was one of the few to turn it down. It's an award that
seems to be dominated by mediocrity. It seems more like a public relations
exercise for a certain type of boringly poemy poetry and a continuing
assertion of its supremacy within poetry, than anything else. It's bankably
pukable.
