1.1 Trustee elections
The call for nominations for elections for two people to serve for
three years as Trustees of ALT and for one person to serve for three
years as a Trustee of ALT in the sequential roles of Vice Chair,
Chair, and then President has now been issued.

1.2 2012 ALT Learning Technologist of the Year Award
The entry form for the 2012 ALT Learning Technologist of the Year
Award has been published.
The Award's overall purpose is to celebrate and reward excellent
practice and outstanding achievement in the learning technology field.
The award is open to individuals and teams based anywhere in the UK.
Awards will be presented in Manchester at the 2012 ALT Conference on
the evening of 12 September 2012, during the Conference Gala Dinner.
The closing date for entries is Friday 25 May 2012.

1.3 Honorary Life Membership of ALT
This year's call for nominations for Honorary Life Membership of ALT
has been issued.
ALT awards Honorary Life Membership (HLM) to individuals whom ALT
believes have made an outstanding and sustained contribution to the
advancement of ALT's aims for the development of learning technology
in a regional, national or international context through research,
practice, policy-development, leadership, or a combination of these.
The deadline for nomination is Friday, 18 May 2012.

1.4 Call for expressions of interest in membership of each of ALT's
four main operational committees
This will be issued in June 2012, with the closing date likely to be
in early September, for those appointed to take part in their first
committee meeting in October.

1.5 Your ALT Newsletter needs You!
ALT is a membership organisation, and the quality of what we can do
for our members is often driven by what we can do ourselves to help
the broader community of practitioners. This is particularly true with
the ALT Newsletter. To this end, we are always receptive to new ideas
and on the lookout for new content.

2. ALT events

2.1 Large-scale curriculum redesign where technology plays a central role
Aston Business School, Birmingham, 21 May 2012
We are running this event with the Association of Colleges (AoC). The
aim of the conference is to provide delegates with ideas and
strategies for curriculum redesign which will have an impact on large
numbers of learners. The event will consist of a series of 35 minute
plenary sessions run by a mixture of presenters. All have valuable

3.1 Learning in a Digital Age – the new effective practice guide from JISC
The latest guide in the JISC Effective Practice series, Learning in a
Digital Age: Extending higher education opportunities for lifelong
learning, will be available from 15 June. The publication signposts
some of the effective higher education practice taking place in the UK
and addresses the benefits and challenges that arise in a digital age.
It is aimed at individuals in further and higher education who have an
interest in lifelong learning.

3.2 AJET Special Issue on Virtual Worlds Published
The Australasian Journal of Educational Technology (AJET) special
issue on Virtual Worlds in Tertiary Education, guest edited by Mark J.
W. Lee (Charles Sturt University and University of New England),
Barney Dalgarno (Charles Sturt University) and Helen Farley
(University of Southern Queensland) has now been published.

4. Other events

4.1 Employer Engagement in a Digital Age - University of Greenwich, 4 July 2012
The 10th annual APT conference will debate and explore issues
surrounding employer engagement within higher education in a digital
world. It is sponsored by the HEA and will include presentations from
outside the UK. This year's keynote speaker is Marcus Orlovsky and the
conference panel will include high profile graduate employers

4.2 HEA-HeLF workshop: Managing an institutional transition from
paper-based to online submission, marking and feedback – Manchester,
Friday 8 June
The workshop will enable participants to: obtain an overview of the
current situation in online submission, marking and feedback in the
UK; learn about institutional projects and case studies; understand
the implications of implementing online submission, marking and
feedback in their own context; identify key action points to take back
to their institution. Speakers include Dr Barbara Newland (University
of Brighton), Alice Bird (Liverpool John Moores University), Dr Neil
Ringan (Manchester Metropolitan University) and Matthew Newcombe
(University of Exeter).

4.3 Curriculum Design: Celebrating successes and continuing the
journey, Programme Meeting - Aston University, Birmingham, 22 -23 May
2012
The purpose of the event is to share the findings from the JISC funded
programme on Institutional approaches to curriculum design and to

wider community.

4.4 Introduction to the Mobile Web: get started on mobile Web content
using W3C Best Practices standards
Starting 30 April 2012 for six weeks
The Mobile Web 1: Best Practices online course will help Web designers
and content producers who are already familiar with the desktop world
to become familiar with the Web as delivered on mobile devices. It is
based entirely on W3C standards, particularly the Mobile Web Best
Practices. The course is split into weekly modules consisting of
lectures and links to further resources, followed by practical
exercises such as quizzes and/or assignments. A discussion forum
allows participants to discuss the course with each other and with the
instructors.

4.5 Future Tense - the Goldsmiths Learning and Teaching Conference, 18 May 2012
Goldsmiths Learning and Enhancement Unit is hosting an international
conference to profile individuals or groups of staff and projects,
that have shaped, challenged or shifted learning and teaching in their
higher education contexts.
Martin Conreen, who lectures in Goldsmiths' Design Department, and
Mark Miodownik, Professor of Materials and Society at University
College and Royal Institute Christmas Lecturer, will be giving the
keynote.

5.1 Call for papers for the Immersive Education Initiative, Paris
Summit, 26-27 November
The theme for the 2nd European Immersive Education (iED) Summit is:
Immersive Education: combining creativity, art and pedagogy. The
two-day event is open to the global academic community and experts in
immersion, simulation, learning games, virtual reality and full,
augmented and mixed reality.

6.1 Bright ideas wanted for new JISC funding platform
JISC elevator is a new way to find and fund innovative ways to use
technology to improve universities and colleges. Anyone employed in UK
higher or further education can submit an idea. If your idea proves

small, practical projects with up to £10,000 available for successful
