Subject: COURSE: Turn Your Data into Insights & Forecasts, Bath, UK, July 2012 - Places still available!
MSC Training is pleased to offer the following 3-day course to be run in
Bath in July (4th to 6th) 2012. Turn Your Data into Insights & Forecasts
with Statistical Thinking is intended for anyone in the public or private
sector who needs to analyse & interpret the results of surveys and trials
and/or data collected over time periods, identify significant impacts,
changes & trends in their data and produce forecasts of the future. The end
result of such analyses is to turn your data into actionable insights &
forecasts that enables data-driven decisions to be made. To achieve this, a
practical understanding of Statistical Thinking, Concepts, Inference &
Forecasting ideas is essential and so, over the three days, you will learn
the following:
· Day 1 the practical application of the standard statistical
concepts of expectation, variance, probability, risk, distribution &
correlation so that you can summarise your data efficiently and start the
process of turning data into meaningful insights & trends.
· Day 2 how to confirm your insights using hypothesis testing
(T-tests, ANOVA, F-tests, Chi-squared test, etc) and how the design of your
trials and surveys affects the insight you obtain from your data.
· Day 3 - how to identify trends & seasonality in your data and
prove they are real using hypothesis tests. How to extract the underlying
trend using moving averages, detect significant deviations from expected
trends using the principles of SPC (Statistical Process Control) and to
extrapolate trends into forecasts.
Our normal venue is the Bath Royal Literary

The DIL https://www-gene.cimr.cam.ac.uk has been at the forefront of recent international success in discovering the genetic variants associated with type 1 diabetes and their function. We are now working to understand the mechanism through which genetic variation can influence disease risk and moving towards intervention trials. This requires careful statistical experimental design and analysis of a diverse range of data, including gene expression and cellular phenotype data.
We require an ambitious and motivated post doctoral statistician to join our statistics group. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in statistics, excellent statistical programming skills, and an ability to communicate and present results both to other statisticians and scientists. Knowledge of genetics or type 1 diabetes is less important than an interest in applying the innovative statistics we have found necessary when dealing with data generated by rapidly developing technologies, in order to answer questions of importance to biology and health.
Applications including a CV and completed Form CHRIS/6 Parts 1 and 3 only - available at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/chris6/should be sent to Ms Jenny Newton, Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, Wellcome Trust/MRC Building, Cambridge, CB2 0XY. Subject: Research assistant/associate post in Manchester
Hello allstat
Research Assistant or Research Associate in Statistics
Primary Care Research Group, School of Community-based Medicine, University of Manchester
Salary range: £24,520 - £35,938 p.a.
Primary Care Databases (PCDs), such as the General Practice Research Database (GPRD), contain detailed electronically captured data on millions of doctor-patient consultations across hundreds of general practices and are a vast potential resource of data for addressing questions about the effectiveness of health interventions. Applications are invited for the above post to work on two different, but overlapping, projects involving PCDs:
Project 1: Uncertainties around issues of data quality, completeness, and confounding factors mean there is a need to more fully establish the validity of results from studies based on PCDs. We aim to identify, further develop, and test methods for addressing validity issues of PCDs, and through this work increase the quality of future PCD-based studies.
Project 2: The 'Quality and Outcomes Framework' (QOF) is the national performance-related pay scheme for general practices. QOF uses a range of quality indicators to measure the care provided to patients and we will use PCDs to investigate a range of questions related to the QOF and the health benefits of incentivized care.
The projects will require extensive manipulation and interrogation of the GPRD database. Statistical methods to be applied include multivariate regression, multilevel models, interrupted time-series, statistical simulation, and methods for assessing the sensitivity of results to unmeasured confounders.
You should hold a good first degree (2.1 or above) or equivalent in statistics or a relevant discipline, a good knowledge of both the theory and application of multivariate statistical methods, such as multiple regression and multi-level models, and experience of using statistical software (preferably STATA) and relational database systems. At the Research Associate level you should have a PhD (completed or near completion) in statistics or a strongly quantitative PhD in a related discipline (eg Health Services Research), knowledge of programming, research experience and a publication record. At the Research Assistant grade there is the opportunity to apply for NSPCR or other funding to undertake a PhD.

Hello allstat, again
Research Assistant or Research Associate in Statistics

Primary Care Databases (PCDs), such as the General Practice Research Database (GPRD), contain detailed electronically captured data on millions of doctor-patient consultations across hundreds of general practices and are a vast potential resource of data for addressing questions about the effectiveness of health interventions.
Recent studies have shown that people with a serious mental illness (SMI) like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder are more likely to die younger and have poorer health than people without an SMI. This is due to the nature of serious mental illness itself, the medications used to treat it, and the greater likelihood of people with SMI having an unhealthy lifestyle.
The 'Quality and Outcomes Framework' (QOF) is the national performance-related pay scheme for general practices. QOF uses a range of quality indicators to measure the care provided to patients and we will use the GPRD to investigate a range of questions related to the QOF and the health benefits of incentivised care for SMI patients.
The project will require extensive manipulation and interrogation of the GPRD database. Statistical methods to be applied include multivariate regression, multilevel models and interrupted time-series.
