The conclusions section of this article contains this mild statement:
"Initial though they may be, the results of this study do seem to support
the statement that law reviews are covered meaningfully in non-legal
databases. Much has been said about what interdisciplinarity may mean for
law, but the question of how the literature of the law can contribute to
other disciplines is equally as important."

In viewing the Findlaw subject lists of law reviews, it becomes very clear
that law is an interdisciplinary field. There are, for example, law
reviews for education law, banking law, criminal law, environmental law,
health law and transportation law. It would seem likely that such
interdisciplinary law journals would be indexed by databases in education,
business, criminal justice, environmental sciences, and medical and health
databases respectively. Such indexing of legal publications by "nonlegal
databases", as Koulikov describes them, is to be expected as part of
thorough coverage of these subject disciplines.

Indeed some fields have law as a sub-discipline, such as the field of
business and the subordinate field of business law, so it would be a
rather incomplete business database that did not include law and business
law journals that contain substantial business related law content.

Finding law journals in the databases of other fields illustrates the
outreach of law scholars beyond the field of law when they publish in
journals indexed beyond the walls of law databases. This unfortunately
does not touch another issue. There is an abundance of legal research,
thinking and analysis in the journals of other fields. Many law students,
law faculty and lawyers I have encountered are not cognizant of the wealth
of law content in other people's databases.
This is not unusual for content of one field to be found in the sources of
other fields..

There is also substantial awareness of the importance of fields outside of
law to law practice in some law fields and practices. One such field is
the field of medical law. Medical practitioners are a regular part of
many law practices in this field and two Yahoo Groups have a body of
shared content, one of which archives, in the practice of this
interdisciplinary field.

In the legal medical world, some legal practitioners recognize the
importance of medical databases and medical research in the work of
lawyers litigating medically related cases such as medical malpractice
cases. Law practice is weakened in fields where the focus is only on
Lexis Nexis and Westlaw and no attention is paid to law content from other
databases. This gap in the thinking of some law students, professors and
practitioners is a more serious issue in my thinking than the extent to
which law journals reach the eyes of users of other fields through the
indexing of non-legal databases.
