Research title: Consent and confidentiality in genetic medicine: enhancing shared decision making
We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced qualitative researcher to work on a charity funded research project which aims to explore the views of patient groups and healthcare professional about the consent and confidentiality issues in genetic medicine. The research team comprises: clinical academics, clinicians, social scientists, and a health care law professor and the study will be undertaken in collaboration with colleagues at the Universities of London and Cardiff and Cambridge.
The research will involve: an analysis of current literature, UK guidelines, policies and legislation affecting the provision of genetic testing of children; and exploring patients' and healthcare professionals' views about consent and confidentiality issues through in-depth interviews and focus groups. A key outcome of the research will be to develop clinical guidance, training materials and patient information.
This research is part of the research portfolio of the CELS group at Southampton Faculty of Medicine (FoM) (www.soton.ac.uk/cels) it is formally housed within the cancer sciences academic unit of the Faculty of Medicine although the research focus will be on genetic medicine as a whole.
You will be educated to PhD level or have equivalent qualifications or experience in social research. Knowledge and experience of qualitative research projects and working as part of a team is essential.
