‘What Children (we) Learn Naturally’
in Pune on april 13, 14,15. This is part of a series of dialogues we are
planning around the questions related to learning, knowing, being etc.
The samvaad will be held in the spirit of questioning,
self-exploration, reflection, sharing of firsthand experience etc and may
not want to indulge in theoretical articulations of so called ‘experts’.
We would like to think afresh on all these questions related to children,
schools, community space etc

Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC), Durham, North Carolina

CFP: The Mobile Image
The iPhone (2007) and similar devices have introduced new platforms for
creating and disseminating art in the form of mobile images. Just as
digital technology radically trans- formed photography, activities such
as editing or otherwise manipulating images created on mobile devices
using low-cost or free ‘apps’, and ‘sharing’ these images via social
media networks and other sites have similarly revolutionized the
production, circulation, and consumption of art.
Yet the concept of a ‘mobile image’ has historical import beyond the
current moment, as artists have long incorporated mobile images and
employed tropes and methods related to mobility. Key examples include
democratizing antecedents such as Fluxus, mail art, conceptual art, and
Joseph Beuys’s theory that “everyone is an artist.” This panel seeks
papers and presentations that broadly explore the related concepts of
‘mobile’ and ‘mobility’ in modern and contemporary art. Some questions
panelists might address include: How have artists utilized ‘mobility’
in their work? How do predecessors like Fluxus and Beuys inform or shed
light upon contemporary mobile artistic practices? How have portable
devices such as the iPhone altered the genre of photography? How does
‘mobility’ (in its many definitions and iterations) aid our
understanding of new or expanded art forms?

DIS’12 Workshop: (DIY)biology, Designing for Open Source Science (June 12, 2012, Newcastle, UK)
Website: http://staceyk.org/diybioworkshop
Deadline for workshop submissions: March 23, 2012
DIYbio (Do It Yourself Biology) is a growing community of biologists, artists, engineers and hobbyists who pursue biology projects outside of professional laboratories. (DIY)bio projects range from gardening and experiments with food, to creating biosensors, genetically modifying organisms or building biology equipment from off the shelf parts. As these developments continue to expand science practice beyond professional settings and into hackspaces, art studios and private homes, human computer interaction (HCI) research is presented with a host of new opportunities and concerns.
Our one-day DIS'12 workshop will bring together a diverse group of designers and HCI researchers, as well as biologists, bioartists, and members of the DIYbio community to critically re-envision the role HCI might play at the intersection of biology, computation and DIY. We will engage directly with DIYbio initiatives to explore the materials, practices and challenges of garage biology. Drawing on presentations from participants who work with organic materials, hands-on biology activities (such as extracting DNA), and structured discussions, we hope to address themes such as: opportunities and implications for integrating organic materials into interactive systems; technologies that support and hinder public engagement with science; and HCI's role in the public discourse around bioethics and biosafety.
March 16, 2012: submissions due
April 16, 2012: accepted submissions notified
June 12, 2012: workshop held in Newcastle, UK
WORKSHOP SUBMISSIONS
We invite submissions using one of the following formats:
*Position paper in DIS archival format (maximum 2 pages)
*An example (photograph/video and description) of a prior (DIY)biology project
*A creative proposal for a biology project or design exercise
In addition, participants are asked to submit a brief (200 word) biography and photo. Submissions from underrepresented disciplines in the HCI community will be particularly welcome (e.g., biology, art, anthropology, literature, philosophy, political science).
Submissions may be sent by email to stace [at] cmu.edu by March 16, 2012.

Institutional Change & Design Leadership: Breaking Into, Up and Out
Hothouse Two: Paris 10th – 13th July 2012
Following the first design leadership Hothouse in Brisbane in July 2011, this aims to further advance innovation and institutional change in design education. It is based on the recognition that there is a growing constituency of educators critical of what is happening within and to higher education, not least its ongoing instrumentalisation. A constituency of educators who in response to their growing disenchantment, and even alienation, are seeking a new kind of design education that is equal to the enormous challenges of now and the future.
Anyone – educators, design practitioners, writers – can apply. From all the applications 50 people will be selected. The event will be conducted in English.
The HotHouse will be led by Associate Professor Oliver Feltham and Professor Tony Fry with five team leaders: Professor Cameron Tonkinwise (Parsons/New School, New York); Associate Professor Oliver Feltham (American University of Paris) Mr Duncan Fairfax (Goldsmiths College, University of London), Ms Anne-Marie Willis (Editor, Design Philosophy Papers) and Ms Bec Barnett (Pi Studio, Goldsmiths College, University of London). Additionally three project groups will be run by Tony Fry and Leah Barcley, Chrisstina Hamilton and Kiersten Nash, Eleni Kalantidou and Bec Barnett.
The Hothouse is to be hosted by the American University of Paris with support from Goldsmiths College, University of London and in association with Griffith University, Queensland College of Art, Brisbane. There is no registration fee, and food will be provided. Travel and accommodation are at the attendee’s expense.

Call for papers for session "Postwar Architecture and the Diplomacy of Furniture," Society of Architectural Historians Annual Conference, Buffalo, April 10-14, 2013
Postwar Architecture and the Diplomacy of Furniture
Consumer goods, especially furniture, were an important means of expressing America’s political and socio-economical strength in the postwar decades. Modern design was used to demonstrate the country’s high standard of living and became a signboard of the ‘American way of life.’ The companies who produced this appealing furniture employed clever export strategies and convincing advertisements; their modern furniture quickly became a staple of office interiors and the homes of the progressive upper-middle class in many parts of the world.
Most studies within this field have focused on the ambitions and strategies of company directors, the architects and designers who created their products, and the graphic design professionals who made these objects so desirable. A thorough understanding of the systems through which their products were promoted and received outside, and to some degree, inside the United States is still lacking. To further explore the role furniture played in selling a political message worldwide and in strengthening the political representation of modern architecture, this session seeks papers that examine the distribution, consumption, and reception of modern furniture between 1945 and c.1960.
Papers may examine highly visible firms as Knoll International or lesser known manufacturers and distributors of modern furniture. We are especially interested in the way their products informed or manipulated ‘local’ furniture production and the visual representation of modern architecture. Other topics might include, but are not limited to, the representation of furniture brands in architecture journals; the role played by modern furniture in foreign diplomatic facilities; the mediation of imported design through exhibitions and showrooms; the role played by modern furniture in Cold War politics; collaborations between design multinationals, local furniture producers and architects/designers; furniture design as a conduit of international exchange. Case studies on individual contributions are welcome, provided they address the larger session theme. Session chairs: Fredie Floré, Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture, VU University Amsterdam/Ghent University, [log in to unmask]; and Cammie McAtee, Harvard University; [log in to unmask]

Call for papers
Recent historiographies of modern architecture aim to show the
connection between the writing of architectural history and the
redefinition of the architectural field. This symposium will be about
the operativity of George Kubler’s work more specifically in the
Portuguese architectural realm after the publication of his work
Portuguese Plain Architecture [PPA] (1972).
Since the publication of PPA (1972, 40 years ago) portuguese
architectural practices and studies have been nudged by its impact. In
The Shape of Time (1962, 50 years ago) Kubler’s philosophy of art
history implied that ‘closed sequences’ could be opened by several
reasons, and in this case Kubler’s PPA catalysed the reemergence of
some of the ‘form classes’ to reappear in Portuguese architecture.
Partly, the connection of PPA with the ideological attributes of early
modernism and the political context of the time catalysed the
reemergence of a new order of Portuguese Plain. Proposals for papers
featuring the following subjects are welcome:
- George Kubler: His work within the context of art and architecture
practice, history and historiography.
- Operative histories: The interaction between theory and practice. The
relationship between the writing of architectural history and the
development of the architectural field
- Plain Architecture: The reception of Kubler’s work in Portuguese
scholarship and architectural practice. The internationalization of
the term.
- Plain Style: Aesthetics of poverty, art and architecture produced in
times of scarcity.
