It depends on what you consider powerful. Software evolves as people need to
scratch and itch, but if your core delivery is maths and physics, you'll have
hit these bumps 10-15 years ago. Numerical questions in mainstream VLEs have
improved, but will they know that 1000 Newtons is equivalent to 1 kiloNewton
or how to calculate the derivative of a random polynomial. Can it output
equations in MathML or generate the images and graphs on the fly?
This may be more than most A-level courses require, in which case I wouldn't
complicate the issue by going outside Moodle, but use the right tool for the
right job.

The more power you need out of your tool, the more you'll have to invest.
WebWork tries to take some of the sting out of its problem language syntax by
having a large library of existing problems.

which is why you use those tools in conjunction with Moodle. The specialized
tools will function as a limited VLE, but miss out a lot of other tools which
have been developed over the years, hence the bridges between the two.
