In the paper Aaron Martin and I have coming out later this year, we distinguish between Closed Circuits, Extended Circuits and Open Circuits. CC(TV), we are all familiar with, and OC(TV) would be the other end of the spectrum. But actually, most systems are somewhere in between, i.e. their circuits are more extended than the 'traditional' closed systems, but they are not (or at least not intended to be) totally open.
