In Japan terms descriptive of the intended (or presented) use of the system
are used instead of descriptive of the techniology. The two dominant terms
are "crime prevention camera" (bouhan kamera) and "monitoring camera" or
"surveillance camera" (kanshi kamera). I've just recently seen a very small
number of places where "safety camera" (bousai kamera - same "bou" as
"bouhan" but with "serious danger such as fire" instead of "crime" as the
second half) is used as well (though the English translation on that sign was
simply "Camera in operation").
