In particular, I would be grateful if List members could pass on information about the following PhD studentship in Social Policy to those who might be interested.
‘Social Innovation And Youth Employment’
Social innovation is increasingly central to the economic growth and well being policy agendas at European, national and sub-national levels. The European Commission Communication 546/2010 ‘Europe 2020 Flagship Initiative Innovation Union’ recommended that Member States promote social innovation across a range of policy fields, and employment is prominent among these. Previous and existing employment policies (including conventional activation policies) do not seem capable of providing employment opportunities of sufficient number nor quality to meet the effects of the economic crisis in the European and UK labour markets, and attention has increasingly shifted to the potential of socially innovative solutions to address the employment problems of younger people in particular. This PhD studentship aims at understanding how social innovation might contribute to improving the employment opportunities of younger less qualified and less skilled workers. The research will analyse and evaluate the impact of selected case studies of socially innovative youth employment initiatives in Scotland and develop policy recommendations on the basis of these findings.
Closing date for applications: Friday 13th April 2012.
