7 March: Qualitative Data Collection: Focus Groups

Focus groups are an increasingly popular qualitative research method but it is vital to understand the kind of data they generate so that they are chosen appropriately. As a method they require considerable questioning and facilitation skills. This highly interactive course shows how to improve the quality of focus group research by achieving optimum group composition, and ensuring a lively and fully participative discussion.

21 March: Qualitative Data Collection: Designing a Study

If you get off on the wrong foot, it is hard to get a project back on track. This one-day intensive course aims to equip participants with a good understanding of the planning and preparation required when conducting a qualitative research project. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on practical sessions, it covers:
* the nature of qualitative research
* what it can and cannot deliver
* main methods and techniques
* developing qualitative research questions
* choosing an appropriate research strategy
* drawing a qualitative sample
* designing topic guides
* judging the quality of qualitative research.

22 March: Qualitative Data Collection: Interviewing

As a qualitative method, interviewing can generate wonderfully rich and nuanced data, but it requires considerable social, listening and questioning skills. This one-day course is designed to help participants become aware of and practise some of the techniques involved. As well as a grounding in the principles of semi-structured and in-depth interviewing, participants will gain hands-on experience of conducting interviews, acting as an interviewee, and giving and receiving detailed feedback. Some knowledge of qualitative research or attendance on the design day is advisable.

23 March: Introduction to Research Project Management

Social research projects, however large or small, have the potential to unravel in the absence of effective project management. The art of project management may require skills of specification, communication, negotiation, time and resource management, damage limitation, in addition to the social research design and methods. The purpose of this course is to equip researchers with the basic knowledge and understanding to help them to effectively manage a research project.
