Research Assistantship
University of Bristol
Applications are invited for a Research Assistantship in the
Astrophysics group of the School of Physics. The position is an
STFC-funded post to work with Dr Ben Maughan, Professor Mark
Birkinshaw and Professor Malcolm Bremer as part of our consolidated
grant theme on the formation and evolution of clusters of
galaxies. The post is funded for 36 months and is available from 1
June 2012 (start date flexible).
This position is part of a major ongoing research programme of the
Bristol Astrophysics Group to study the formation and evolution of
galaxy clusters and the co-evolution of clusters and their member
galaxies. The cornerstone of this work is our participation in the XXL
cluster survey; the largest XMM-Newton project awarded time to
date. This survey will transform the study of cluster evolution
through the detection of large numbers of clusters at high
redshift. The project will exploit the new cluster sample derived from
XXL using comprehensive supporting multi-wavelength data to advance
cluster studies into new regimes in redshift and mass.
You should hold a PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics or a related
discipline, or have submitted your thesis at the time of taking up the
appointment. You should have experience of successfully reducing and
analysing X-ray observations of galaxy clusters and/or studying
clusters of galaxies using other observational techniques
(SZ/lensing/optical etc). An ability to create new data analysis or
modelling tools would be an advantage.
