A simple (and rather embarrassing) question: can anyone tell me who first used the term "candidate science" to describe such disciplines as phrenology? I've been using it for years, but having been recently pressed for a precise citation realised that I picked it up from lectures and seminar discussions and cannot remember its precise origin.
Thanks (in anticipation), Jim
