Juanita
Thank you so much for this. I will certainly reference your work. I have a feeling there is a lot of interest in this area and if opportunities arise as a result I will certainly be in touch.
Many thanks
Andrew

I'm a teaching Fellow at Aberystwyth University in the Department of Information Studies and obtained funding through our Gwella project to buy a Flipcam to capture video for use on a Masters in ILS module. Brief details about the project are on my blog http://nottotallyacademic.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/building-bridges/ and there are a couple of linked posts on there about interviewing and also trials and tribulations under the video tag on my blog http://nottotallyacademic.wordpress.com/tag/video/ . Some further information also on the Nexus site with sample clip http://nexus.aber.ac.uk/xwiki/bin/view/Main/DIS+Gwella
The use of video was an alternative to a study tour/guest lecture scenario, and the clips themselves have been reused in a number of courses I teach to illustrate different aspects of professional practice in the information service field.
Specficially :
*
Embedded in Wimba Create learning objects as case studies or illustrations. Clips are included with instructions as part of an activity. Transcripts are provided as linked word files. This caused some issues as the embedded videos wouldn't always play depending on browser set up, and Mac users couldn't play them at all. I ended up putting the files in the Moodle VLE as downloads for students to access that way. I am trying out the institution's streaming server as an alternative for other courses.
*
Used in full time sessions to give students examples of different Information service environment: clips are played in class and handouts provided with questions so that students actively watch and engage with the video. This is followed by class discussion
Whilst the flip cam is simple to use, the proprietary software is an issue and I think were I to start over I would use a digital camera with memory card for ease of transferring files. I found the most useful thing was having an audio file as well, which I then passed to our transcription service. This was useful in two ways: 1 - it provided script for accessibility and 2: Enabled me to easily to search for keywords to identify areas of the video to clip. Only downside was that the transcription service didn't put timecodes on this which would have made marrying script and clip much easier - still easier than viewing whole thing.
I used windows movie maker software for editing the clips - it allowed me to segment them and add titles/credits screens which either introduced the clip or person being interviewed or the themes covered in the clip. It was also relatively easy to put a series of clips together into a themed segment.
For the clips I used a permissions template, and also provided copies of the footage to the interviewee to confirm they were happy for it to be used. Given that I was interviewing in corporate information services in some cases this had to be vetted by corporate media office/risk team as part of the process.
I presented on this on a technology enhanced learning showcase event, and the session was recorded using CourseCast software and is available at http://nexus.aber.ac.uk/xwiki/bin/view/Main/Showcase
Hope this gives a flavour of what I've been trying to do with video and if you wish to discuss further please feel free to contact me.
