HUMAN RIGHTS FILM SCREENINGS
4 April 2012 @ 6.30pm
Winchester Discovery Centre Performance Hall
The Winchester School of Art’s Centre for Global Futures in Art Design & Media is proud to present the screening of two critical human rights documentaries: Sue Clayton’s short film Hamedullah: The Road Home and acclaimed Zimbabwean director Simon Bright’s feature-length Mugabe… What Happened? The directors will attend the screening, which will be introduced by professor Sean Cubitt and followed by a discussion and Q&A session with the two film directors.
Hamedullah: The Road Home | Sue Clayton | UK, AFGHANISTAN 2012 | 23mins
Every year, around 2000 children come to the UK from war-zones like Afghanistan. As children they are protected by the UK Children’s Act. As soon as they turn 18, the Home Office forcibly returns them to their home country on so-called secret ‘ghost flights’. This film, endorsed by Emma Thompson and Lenny Henry, enables Hamedullah Hassany to tell his story and show his reality in haunting video diary fragments.
Mugabe… What Happened? | Simon Bright | UK, ZIMBABWE 2011 | 1h30mins
Billed as the definitive account of Robert Mugabe’s life, this film dramatically illustrates his successful liberation and development of the country and his deterioration into ruthless and cunning retention of power. Director Simon Bright opposed Ian Smith’s white supremacy rule in the 60s and 70s, and Mugabe’s ruthlessness since the 90s. He was imprisoned, but slipped back across the South African border into Zimbabwe secretly in 2007 in order to make this film. The film has won one of South Africa’s prestigious SAFTA awards.
