I need to reply to this:

(1) We use Google Analytics to track overall usage of the site, as our
information services people have no internal system for analysing web logs
and Google Analytics gives us nice clear data on how many visits we get,
the geographical origins of users etc. We have no interest in who
individual users are, the Analytics interface does not tell us, and I
don't think we are adding much to Google's ability to follow them (which
is anyway vast).
(2) Adding links so that users can recommend us via Twitter, Google+ etc,
is separate. Personally I find being able to look at this quite
interesting:
https://twitter.com/search?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oldmapsonline.org%2F
(3) Old Maps Online is not really a "web site". The small number of other
pages ("Collections", "Blog", "About", "Contribute") turn out to be hosted
on other systems, i.e. Blogger and Google Sites. The home page IS the
portal, and it is basically a computer program written in Javascript -- so
yes, having quite a lot of Javascript is necessary. What is the objection?
(4) I don't know what "your trailer" refers to.
Best wishes,
Humphrey Southall
