ABOUT THE SCHOOL
RuSSIR 2012 will be held on August 6-10, 2012 in Yaroslavl, Russia.
The school is organized by the Yaroslavl Demidov State University
(http://www.uniyar.ac.ru) and the Russian Information Retrieval
Evaluation Seminar (ROMIP, http://romip.ru) with support from the
MUMIA network (http://www.mumia-network.eu/). Yandex, Google,
Rambler, HP, and ABBYY are confirmed sponsors of the school.
The RuSSIR series started in 2007 and has developed into a renowned
academic event with solid international participation. Previous
RuSSIR courses were taught by Eugene Agichtein, Sihem Amer-Yahia,
Ricardo Baeza-Yates, Ben Carterette, Fabio Crestani, Djoerd Hiemstra,
Evangelos Kanoulas, Mounia Lalmas, Marie-Francine Moens, Salvatore
Orlando, Raffaele Perego, Andreas Rauber, Stefan Rueger, Horacio
Saggion, Fabrizio Silvestri, Mike Thelwall, Gerhard Weikum, Emine
Yilmaz, and others.
The mission of the school is to teach students modern techniques and
applications for Information Retrieval and related disciplines and to
create environment for contacts among leading researchers, students
and industry professionals.
RUSSIR 2012 PROGRAM
The foci of this year's edition are multilingual information access,
cross-language information retrieval, and machine translation. RuSSIR
2012 offers the following courses:
* Ingmar Weber - An Introduction to Web Science
* Allan Hanbury and Mihai Lupu - Domain Specific Information
Retrieval (MUMIA course)
* Marta Ruiz Costa-jussa and Maxim Khalilov - The Concept and
Feasibility of Modern Statistical Machine Translation
* Chirag Shah - IR in Community Question-Answering
* Guillaume Obozinski - Probabilistic Graphical Models for
Information Retrieval
* Ismail Sengor Altingovde and Nattiya Kanhabua - Dynamics of Web
In addition, the school program will feature invited lectures and the
sponsors' tech talks. An optional pre-school one-day course
'Introduction to IR' by Andrew Aksyonoff (Sphinx Technologies Inc.)
will be given on Sunday, August 5th.
The Young Scientists Conference is an essential part of the school
program. The school is also famous for its versatile social programs.
The working language of the school is English.
PARTICIPATION
The school has as its target audience advanced graduate and PhD
students, post-doctoral researchers, academic and industrial
researchers, and developers. The school will admit up to 150 pre-
selected participants. Selection will be made by program committee
members based on submitted applications. Each participant is expected
to present a poster at the Young Scientists Conference; full papers
are optional. Accepted full papers are published in conference
proceedings, best papers will be recommended for publishing in
'Modeling and Analysis of Information Systems' journal.
Participation is free of charge, a number of accommodation grants are
provided.
RuSSIR 2012 online application form will be open by April 6th, 2012.

ABOUT THE VENUE
The city of Yaroslavl is the administrative center of Yaroslavl
Oblast, located 250 km northeast of Moscow. Founded in the 11th
century by prince Yaroslav the Wise, Yaroslavl is one of the oldest
Russian cities. Yaroslavl belongs to the Golden Ring, a group of
towns northeast of Moscow that have played an important role in
Russian history, which are now called "open air museums" and feature
unique monuments of Russian architecture of the 12th–18th centuries.
In 2010 Yaroslavl celebrated its 1,000th anniversary. The historical
part of Yaroslavl is a World Heritage Site located at the picturesque
confluence of the rivers Volga and Kotorosl.
