"Gegen die Welt" / "Against the World" - German-English Reading by Jan Brandt
Celebrated in the press as "the most ambitious debut of the season" (Frankfurter Allgemeine), "astonishingly elegant" (Sueddeutsche Zeitung), and "impressive" (ZEIT), the novel "Gegen die Welt" by the young and upcoming German author Jan Brandt has been one of the most spectacular literary debuts in 2011 and was shortlisted for the prestigious Deutscher Buchpreis (German Book Prize).
The novel, a thrilling hybrid of a coming-of-age story, social satire and mystery, provides sharp, sometimes cynical insights into everyday life (and horror) in the German provinces. The story of the teenager Daniel, who is not only confronted with the "usual" problems of school and family, but - among other things - with an alleged alien abduction, mysterious signs on the walls, and, finally, with the hostility of the whole village, has been described by ROLLING STONE as a "bastard of Uwe Johnson (with) the subtlety of J.D. Salinger, and the horror of Stephen King."
The German Department is delighted to invite you to a public reading by Jan Brandt, who is currently DAAD Writer in Residence in London:
