THE ETHICS OF CITIZEN JOURNALISM & SOCIAL MEDIA (PHDCCI004)
Application Deadline - 14th May 2012
This PhD will consider the development of an ethical framework
surrounding citizen journalism and, more broadly, the ethics of social
media production. It is informed by two primary trajectories, the
first of which is the UK Leveson inquiry, which has provoked new
questions about media ethics. The second is the rise of the Web 2.0
era of content generation, whereby the act of reporting and sharing
content has become a pervasive media practice.
In recent months, these two areas have overlapped in headlines
surrounding the content of social media platforms such as Twitter,
where messages have been found to breach certain laws, codes of
conduct and moral principles. The successful applicant will
investigate how ethical concern arises within a range of citizen media
environments, with a view to understanding how professional and
amateur practices interface and what kinds of ethical regulation or
codes of conduct should inform future media practice.
A Master degree in ethics, social science methods or related media
subjects will be an advantage, as will the ability to demonstrate
awareness of and participation in social media environments.
The work will sit within the UWS Creative Futures Research Centre, a
cross-university environment aimed at addressing research at the
borders of STEM and non-STEM subjects. For more information see

UWS is an inspiring, vibrant place to study with a growing research
community; an important aspect of which is its outstanding and
committed research students.
Successful candidates will receive a £6000 stipend for three years and
payment of tuition fees (current value £3400).
This studentship is open to Home/EU candidates with a first degree in
a relevant discipline.
Non-EU students can apply, but will not receive the stipend and will
be required to pay fees.
Candidates must be available to commence their studies in October 2012.
Application deadline is 14th May 2012 – please quote Project Reference Number.
All interviews will take place between 21st May and 8th June 2012.
