Hi Jennifer,
I think you would be best to follow up those contacts first, arrange an
affiliation of sorts with the Department of Geography at NUS (or
alternatively the Asia Research Institute at NUS) and seek their
assistance with the visa process. There are NUS members on this forum who
might help but the best thing to do would be to make direct contact
yourself - it is a very friendly and welcoming department.
Alternatively - you can apply to have an extension to your visitor visa
(no need to jump the border) - of course the ease with which you can do
this does somewhat depend on your passport. I would take the official
route.
