I've tried both writing and tweeting at the same time (not enough hands!) and just tweeting. I can't say which is best for remembering, the main problem is finding my tweets again afterwards for when I've just tweeted only.
Tweeting while chairing an event (CIG shelf-ready event last December) though is really tough and not something I'd try again quickly!
Haven't really used Twitter to follow an event I've not attended though.

How do people feel about Twitter and conferences? I know some find it
incredibly annoying that people spend the whole time on their phones.
Can you tweet and listen at the same time? How useful do you find it to
follow tweets from a conference you aren't attending - is it a valid
substitute for being there in person?
Which conferences/events have you followed and what was the experience
like?
